One of my favorite comments I hear is that results look “incredibly soft and natural”, and protecting that look starts the minute you leave my studio. For the first 48 hours, keep your lash line clean and mostly dry, and don’t put makeup or skincare on the treated area. After that, you’ll still avoid water on the liner and skip mascara while your skin seals back up. If you follow the timeline below, your top and bottom liner tends to heal smoother and hold color more evenly.
The first 24 to 48 hours: dry, clean, and hands-off
Top and bottom liner is done right along the lash line, so the first two days are all about reducing swelling and keeping bacteria out. I’m very big on clean workspaces, and your aftercare should match that same energy at home.
Quick rule: If it makes your eyes water, sweat, or steam up, pause it for now.
Do this right away
- Keep the area mostly dry. Avoid splashing water directly on the liner and skip face-down showers.
- No rubbing, no picking, no “just checking it” with your fingers. If it itches, that’s usually healing.
- Skip steam: hot showers, saunas, facial steamers, and standing over boiling pots.
- Sleep on your back if you can, and swap to a clean pillowcase the first night.
What you’ll probably notice
Mild swelling and a “tight” feeling are common, especially on the lower liner. A lot of my Plainfield clients tell me discomfort is minimal and short-lived. One person described the worst part later that day as feeling like a slight sunburn with minimal swelling. That’s the range I see most often.
Days 3 to 14: flaking is normal, picking is what causes gaps
Around day three, the liner often looks darker, then you’ll see light scabbing or flaking. That’s expected. The biggest mistake I see is trying to “help” the peeling along. When you pull at skin that’s not ready to let go, you can pull pigment with it.
Midwest reality check: Cooler evenings and fall pollen around Old Town Plainfield can make eyes watery. If your allergies are flaring, plan extra time to blot gently and keep hands away from your eyes.
Avoid these for the full healing window
- Mascara, eyeliner pencil/gel, shadow fallout on the lash line, and lash curlers for 7 to 14 days.
- Pools, hot tubs, saunas, and heavy sweating for 10 to 14 days.
- Facials, chemical peels, and strong actives near the eye area for 4 weeks.
- Lash serums near the eye area for at least 4 weeks. If you’re unsure, ask me before you restart.
And yes, the color can look lighter after peeling. I explain this during the appointment because it’s part of normal eyeliner tattoo healing, and it’s one reason touch-ups exist. If you’re a parent balancing after-school time, keep this simple: let the liner heal, then enjoy the easier mornings. A walk at Settlers’ Park is fine. A sweaty run and a sauna are not.
Ointment, cleansing, and the “less is more” routine that keeps liner crisp
I keep aftercare product advice very straightforward because the eye area doesn’t need a ten-step plan. Use only what I recommend for you, and apply it in a thin layer if I’ve instructed you to use an ointment. Too much product can stay wet, trap debris, and slow down healing.
My go-to aftercare habits
- Wash your hands before you touch near your eyes, every time.
- Avoid getting cleanser, shampoo, or conditioner into the lash line. Those ingredients can irritate healing skin.
- Blot tears gently. Don’t wipe side-to-side across the liner.
- If your eyes feel dry, use what your eye doctor recommends. Keep it off the lash line unless we’ve discussed it.
If you found me by searching permanent makeup near me or permanent makeup services near me, this is the part that protects your investment. The service itself is two hours for top and bottom liner, and healing is where that “always put together” look settles in.
When to text me, when it’s normal, and how touch-ups fit (6 to 8 weeks)
I’m detailed in the appointment and I’m detailed afterward too. People regularly tell me I explain things step by step and check in to make sure they’re comfortable. That doesn’t stop when you leave.
“Aurora took the time to thoroughly explain the entire process, patiently addressing all my questions and concerns.”

Normal healing signs
- Mild swelling, mild tenderness, and a tight feeling the first couple of days
- Flaking or light scabbing days 3 to 14
- Temporary lightening after peeling
Reach out right away if you notice
- Severe swelling that gets worse instead of better
- Pus, discharge, or heat coming off the skin
- Spreading redness beyond the lash line
- Any sudden reaction that worries you
Touch-ups usually happen around 6 to 8 weeks. If you commute, that follow-up is typically quick and easy to plan since Old Town Plainfield is accessible from I-55 and the Metra for evening-friendly check-ins. My aftercare guidance is the same for clients across Plainfield, Naperville, Joliet, Romeoville, Lockport, and Bolingbrook.
If you’re exploring other services too, I keep everything under one roof, including permanent eyeliner, micro powder brows, powder brows, nano blading, and scar revision. You can start with permanent makeup in Old Town Plainfield to see what fits your routine.

Top and bottom liner aftercare FAQs (dry time, mascara, swimming, scabs, contacts)
How long should I keep my eyes dry after top and bottom liner?
I want you keeping the lash line mostly dry for the first 48 hours. After that, continue avoiding direct water on the treated area for the first 7 to 14 days. A careful shower is fine, just don’t blast the eye area or soak it.
Can I wear mascara after top and bottom liner?
Hold off for 7 to 14 days. Mascara flakes and removal friction are the two big issues. If you’re still flaking at day 10, wait a little longer. It’s not worth risking patchy healing.
When can I swim or use a hot tub after top and bottom liner?
Plan on 10 to 14 days with no pools, hot tubs, or soaking. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria are not your friend during eyeliner tattoo healing.
Will my eyelids scab after top and bottom liner and what should I do?
Light scabbing or flaking is common between days 3 and 14. Leave it alone. Don’t pick. Keep your routine simple and use only the product I recommend. Picking is the fastest way to create little “holidays” in the line.
Can I wear contact lenses after getting top and bottom liner?
Many artists advise waiting 24 to 48 hours. I generally recommend giving your eyes that break, then putting contacts in with very clean hands and extra care not to touch the lash line.
